Back to Basics
-Maria V
Women are notorious shoppers, finding any excuse to head to a mall. But money is often
wasted on items that are not worth the cash. Novelty items are costly and can really dent a
wallet. A Novelty item is an item that cannot be worn or used on a day-to-day basis, like colorful
chunky jewelry, belts, bags, and scarves. These accessories are useful but they are still a novelty
and there is no need to be wasting money on things we change everyday. Target, TJMaxx, and
Marshalls are all places where we can find great accessories for an affordable price. By avoiding
Novelty items you’re likely to save big bucks, and can then used some of the money saved to
purchase higher quality basics that can enhance your wardrobe.
Quality clothing does not come cheap. But the extra money spent is well worth it
because the clothes last longer. You get what you pay for, and if we’re spending a little extra on
something it should be something that can be worn day-to-day. So when is it okay to splurge?
Splurging is permissible from time to time but only when it comes to the basics. The basics are
pieces that every woman should have in her closet, the classics, including the little black dress,
a blazer, pumps, and a sturdy pair of jeans. Basics can vary depending on the person, if you’re a
girl who loves to wear pink then a pink pair of pumps would be suitable. However, if you can’t
stand pink or don’t have a signature color then neutral colors are often the best bet.
Now some may hesitate when they picture wearing the same thing day after day. The
common misconception is that people will notice you’re wearing the same thing or that you
won’t look as good if you’re not wearing a different outfit everyday. Wrong! Accessorizing can
completely change a look, so you won’t look like you’re wearing the same thing twice, and by
making the outfit your own there’s no way you won’t look good. Add a colorful blazer to your
little black dress for a more professional look, then ditch the blazer, add a metallic belt, a pair
of heels and your ready for a night out. Changes like these can take an outfit from day to night
with a simple accessory switch. There is no need to spend a ton of money buying expensive
accessorizes. Save your money for those designer jeans you’ve been eyeing, or the Gucci pumps
you just can’t live without.
It’s simple, splurge on the basics, it’s okay because there won’t be a need to go out and
buy new pumps because your old ones became ratty. Quality pieces will last and are timeless;
you’ll look good now and a year from now. Saving money never goes out of style, treat yourself
to the basics and more importantly love what you buy, because if you don’t love it it’s not worth
the money.
